Obituary

LANCASTER, SC – James William Hinson "Mr. William", Jr, 86, of Lancaster, SC peacefully passed away on November 6, 2024.

Mr. William was born in Lancaster, SC to James William (J.W.) Hinson, Sr and Elizabeth Simpson Hinson on March 6, 1938. After graduating from Heath Springs High School in 1956, he served in the United States Army in Washington, DC and France. Upon returning home to Lancaster, he began working at Lancaster Feed and Seed, where his love for farming and agriculture began to grow. His love of farming, along with a desire to help others be successful farmers, gardeners or just keep a single plant alive would become not just his calling but his legacy to the people of Lancaster and the surrounding communities. He opened the doors to Elgin Feed and Garden with the hope of serving locals in the community. Over thirty-eight years, William rose each day to do what he loved, investing in people through his knowledge and expertise with plants and agriculture. He was able to master the art of loving what you do.

His love for work made his hobbies few, but he enjoyed a challenging round of Jeopardy, journaling about the events of daily life and a good western. He loved nothing more than a long road trip down backroads, a day at the Farmer's Market, several days in the mountains as well as the annual farm show with friends.

William was committed to teaching Sunday School for over fifty years, serving as Sunday School Director and ministering to those around him as a Deacon at Rich Hill Baptist Church. While serving as a caretaker for his mother, William helped to start a ministry serving the residents of Heath Springs Residential Care through worship and song each week. This ministry continues today.

William was a quiet strong Christian, a good man.

In his heart a man plans his journey, but the Lord determines his steps. Proverbs 16:9

William is survived by his wife of 60 years Ruby Anne Knight Hinson; daughter Amanda Steele (Marshall), daughter Anna Oates; grandchildren Mary Marshall Steele, William Banks Steele, Sam Hardin Oates and Anna Bradley Oates.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister Frances Ann Hinson Fleming; and his son-in-law, Bradley Hardin Oates.

We will be remembering a life well lived on Sunday, November 10th at 2 pm at Rich Hill Baptist Church. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Rich Hill Baptist Church Family Life Center.

Memorials may be made to Connie Maxwell Children's Home (810 Maxwell Ave. Greenwood, SC 29646) and Rich Hill Baptist Church (1557 E. Doc Garris Road, Heath Springs, SC 29058).
