LANCASTER, SC ~ Mr. Walter Byrd, Jr., age 90, passed away Friday, May 10, 2019 at MUSC-Lancaster surrounded by family.  He was born October 24, 1928 in Kershaw County, a son of the late Walter Byrd, Sr. "Pet" and Susie Mungo Byrd and is the husband of Ann Adams Byrd.  Mr. Byrd retired from Springs Industries after 43 years of service.  He served our country in the United States Army during the Korean War.  He was a big sports fan and especially loved the SC Gamecocks and was an avid fan of the Atlanta Braves. He enjoyed walking, riding his exercise bike and working in his yard.  Hardee's was his morning therapy.  Mr. Byrd was a member of White Springs Baptist Church where he served as Deacon, was leader of the Baptist Men and the Baptist Men's Association.

Mr. Byrd is survived by his wife of 63 years, Ann Adams Byrd; a son, Art Byrd and his wife, Kay of Lancaster and two grandchildren, Evan Byrd and his wife, Stephanie and Erin Byrd and her fiancé, Dustin Eddins.

Mr. Byrd was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, William Byrd, Mickey Byrd, Bobby Byrd, Cephie Byrd and Fred Byrd, and four sisters, Pauline Shealy, Dot Davis, Helen Knight and Mattie Lee Byrd.

The Celebration of Life Memorial Service for Mr. Byrd will be 11:00 am Tuesday, May 14, 2019 at White Springs Baptist Church by Rev. Mike Hammond.  Burial will follow at Lancaster Memorial Park.
