Obituary

INDIAN LAND, SC – Mr. Wallace "Wally" William Drexler, age 88, of Indian Land, SC, died Sunday at Presbyterian Medical Center in Charlotte, NC. He was born February 23, 1937, in Newville, PA, the son of the late William Henry Drexler and Ruth Mary Koser Drexler.

He lived in PA, IN, MD, NC, SC, and Victoria, Australia. He taught science for 14 years in public schools in PA, MD, and Victoria, Australia. He then taught science as a Professor at Shippensburg University for 23 years. He was a graduate of Big Spring High School (Newville, PA) (1955), Shippensburg State Teachers College (Shippensburg, PA), and Indiana University (Bloomington, IN). Wally received his Bachelor's in Biology and Chemistry from Shippensburg University of PA. He later earned his Master's in Earth Science at Indiana University in Bloomington, IN with emphasis on Paleontology. He obtained a Doctorate degree in Earth Science at Penn State University with research in fossil bryozoans in NC. He did additional course work at Franklin and Marshall College, Temple University, Indiana University, and N.Y. Polytechnic Institute; studies included geology, astronomy, meteorology, chemical oceanography, marine carbonates of the Florida Keys, and field stratigraphy of the Rocky Mountains. Wally also taught at Wallops Island, VA as a member of the Marine Science Consortium.

He maintained memberships in PIAA, NISOA, TCA, PSU, SU, HAGS, IU, GSA, NSTA, PSTA, NAGT, Smithsonian Institution, and National Geographic Society.

He was a member of Faith Presbyterian Church in Indian Land, SC where he was and Elder and served on serval committees. He carved two large wooden crosses for the interior of the church. He had a deep faith in God.

Wally's hobbies included collecting Lionel trains, woodworking (member of the PA Guild of Craftsman), and golf.

He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Carolyn Louise Boldosser Drexler. Also surviving, his daughter, Dawn Drexler Schmucker (John) of Whitsett, NC; three grandchildren, Sarah Riedlinger (Ben), Ray Drexler Schmucker (Stella), and Benjamin Schmucker (Angela); and four great grandchildren.

The Celebration of Life Service for Mr. Drexler will be at 11:00am Saturday, April 5th, 2025 at Faith Presbyterian Church officiated by Pastor David Bender.
