Obituary

CLINTON, SC ~ Mr. Van Derrick Small, 89, passed away on March 16, 2020 at Presbyterian Communities of SC-Clinton. He was born on January 8, 1931 in Lancaster, SC, a son of the late Amzy Joshua Small and Mary Louise Gregory Small and the husband of the late Athalene Hudson Small. He served our country during the Korean War in the Army National Guard, 714th AAA Gun Battalion, Lancaster, SC. Mr. Small retired as a Mechanic from General Tire.  He was a Shriner with the Hejaz Temple. Mr. Small loved the outdoors and spending time with his grandchildren. He was a member at Taylors First Baptist Church and formerly, a member of Second Baptist Church-Lancaster.

Mr. Small is survived by two daughters, Leah Small Reid (George) of Anderson, and LeAnn Small Smith (Warren) of Fair Play; five grandchildren, Anna Reid Nichols (Kevin) of Easley, Paul Reid (Whitney) of Rock Hill, Avery Smith Krawczyk (Scott) of Simpsonville, Scott Reid (Holly) of York, and Douglas Smith of Huntington, WV; nine great grandchildren; a sister, Ann Gregory Hunter; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife and his parents, Mr. Small was preceded in death by a brother, Amzy Wray Small.

A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be announced at a later date.  The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of Clinton Presbyterian Community Home, G Wing Nursing Unit, for the compassionate care they provided their daddy.
