She finished her teaching career with a twenty-year stint at Greenwich High School. She also worked with the Connecticut Writing Project and consulted for them on projects after her retirement.

Susan was also a poet. She was named Poet of the Year by the Connecticut Council of Teachers of English in 2001. She self-published a book of poems on aging called Into the Sunset in 2025, in addition to Baggage, a novella and collection of short stories, which she co-wrote with authors, Alan Mulak and Donna Smith.

Susan and her husband, William thoroughly enjoyed travel, and they traveled to nearly every continent in the world, mostly following their daughter Robin to the places where she lived as an international school teacher.
