Obituary

LANCASTER, SC:::::::::::Mrs. Sue Simpson McCain Carter, age 90, passed away Monday, April 21, 2014 surrounded by her loving family. She was born October 8, 1923 in Union County, NC, the middle of three daughters to S. Bonner McCain and Ellen Simpson McCain. She attended Unity School and graduated from Buford High School. After completing a business course, she worked for Buckelew Dime Store and later as a secretary for the American Red Cross during World War II. She married Samuel Hazel Carter and spent the rest of her life enjoying being a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Sue and Hazel were gardeners who took pride in sharing their harvests with friends, family and neighbors. The two of them were best friends and found joy in simple activities: visits with friends and family, fishing at the family pond and fish fries. Sue was known for her dry sense of humor and spunky ways. She "spoke her mind!"

Sue was a lifetime member of Unity Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church where she was active in Women's Ministries, the Boyce Circle and the Montgomery Sunday School Class. She also found great pleasure in the Leroy Springs Senior Citizens and Unity Sunshiners where she and her friends played games, traveled and shared recipes and food.

She was preceded in the death by her husband, Hazel Carter, a son, Keith Carter, and a sister, Sara Dean McCain.

Sue is survived by a son, Richard Bonner Carter and his wife Patty, a daughter, Nancy Elaine Carter Honeycutt and her husband David, and a daughter-in-law, Karen Barr Carter all of Lancaster; 7 grandchildren; Jennifer Carter Duffie, Courtney Carter Zammiello, Richard Bonner Carter II, Christopher Carter, Lynn Anderson Williams, Michael Anderson and David Wayne Honeycutt; a sister, Lucy McCain Morris and her husband Ben Morris; 9 great grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and also special friend and caregiver, Mary Ellen Hayes.
