INDIAN LAND, SC ~ Steve Wilbur Cantrell, 95, of Indian Land, SC passed away peacefully on Friday, January 3, 2025, after battling congestive heart failure for 11 months. Steve was born and raised in Chesnee, SC, the son of Hazie Eben and Fay Cantrell. Upon high school graduation, he attended Spartanburg Methodist College. He then joined the US Navy, where he served 1 year of active duty in San Diego, CA and 6 years in the Naval Reserves. Upon finishing his duty with the Navy, he studied at the Coyne Electronics Institute in Chicago, IL. After a 32-year career with the FAA at Charlotte Douglas Airport, he contracted with Raytheon and worked on navigational aids at multiple US airports.
Steve's passion was sailing, and he could be found almost every weekend sailing on Lake Norman or sailing in a regatta on a lake somewhere on the east coast. However, what he loved best was spending time with his family either at home or as the family traveled out west, to the Blue Ridge Mountains or Garden City Beach for summer vacations.
Steve was predeceased by his parents, 2 sisters and brothers-in-law: Kathleen Steele (Melvin), Peggy Seigler (Gary) and son-in-law Clay Hassard. He is survived by his wife of 67 years Jo Ann, his son Bill Cantrell (Cindy), his daughter Elizabeth Hassard, grandchildren Allison Hassard (Val), Claire Schlarf (Stuart), Jack Cantrell, niece Allison Harrison (Louie) and his cousin Winnie.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, January 16, 2025 at 1:00pm at Unity Presbyterian Church, 303 Tom Hall Street, Fort Mill, SC 29715. Family will greet friends in the fellowship hall immediately following the service.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Unity Presbyterian Church or to Novant Health Hospice, PO Box 33549, Charlotte, NC 28233.
