Obituary

INDIAN LAND, SC – Mr. Stephen Marshall Stein, age 66, passed away Friday, March 4, 2022, at Atrium Health-Wake Forest Baptist Hospital.  He was born in Kingsport, TN and was the son of Lois Wilson Stein Brookshire and the late William Ashley Stein.

Stephen was the husband of Jane Wilson Stein.  Stephen and Jane were married on April 1, 1997 in Negril, Jamaica.  They were a pair of "April Fools" who enjoyed 24 wonderful years together along with their blended family of four children.   Many of those years was spent in Clover, SC before making the down-size move to Sun City Carolina Lakes in Indian Land, SC.

Stephen spent the majority of his career in the lithium metals industry.  He spent the early years of his career with FMC Lithium in Bessemer City, NC before forming two unique companies that were devoted to providing lithium foil, dry rooms, and consulting expertise for this industry.  His businesses required frequent trips to Asia where he formed many strong business and personal relationships.

Stephen was a kind and gentle man and was known for his compassion for animals as well as for his magnetic connection with small children.  He often said that there was a special place in heaven for animal lovers and there is no doubt that he is passing out treats to all of the "puppies and kitties" in that special place now. He also enjoyed collecting coins, baking and sharing bread with his neighbors, and surf fishing on family beach vacations.  Stephen was a member of Faith Presbyterian Church.

Stephen is survived by his wife, Jane Stein; his son Marshall Stein (Mary); his daughter, Chelsea Dawson; two granddaughters, Amber Stein and Marley Dawson; two bonus sons, Brian Curlee and Joseph Curlee; his mother, Lois Brookshire; three brothers, Will Stein, Randy Stein and Bruce Stein; three sisters, Sandy Garner (Rob), Patrice Carlin (Tom), and Jennifer Dowell (Dusty); five step-sisters, Kay Beehan (Tom), Ann Brookshire, Gale Montgomery (John), Judi Brookshire (Ron Koksal), and Sharon Hanrahan (John); one step-brother, Frank Brookshire; and a large extended family. Stephen was surrounded by much of this family at the time of his passing.

Stephen was preceded in death by his father, William Stein and his step-father, Dr. Paul Brookshire.
