LANCASTER, SCMr. Sam Carnes, Jr., age 98, died on February 27 at Springs Memorial Hospital. He was born July 9, 1917 in Lancaster County, the last remaining child of Sam and Mandy Knight Carnes. He was the loving husband for 70 years to Lennie McManus Carnes before her passing in 2012. Surviving to cherish his memory are four children: daughters Brenda Fowler and her husband, Larry of Lancaster, Linda McCants and her husband, Walter (Buck) of Rock Hill, SC; and sons Samuel Glenn Carnes of Charlotte, NC and Darrell Marshall Carnes and his wife, Kathie of Lancaster; seven grandchildren: Tim and Joi Fowler of Spartanburg, SC, Tammy Fowler of Spartanburg, SC, Perry Fowler and wife Marta of Charlotte, NC, and Kimberly Fowler of Indian Land; Darrell M. Carnes and his wife, Missy of Monroe NC; Southwest Airlines First Officer Matthew McCants of Phoenix, AZ and Major (Select) (USAF) Michael McCants of Tucson, AZ; and two great grandchildren, Chase and Marena Carnes of Monroe, NC. Five brothers and three sisters preceded Mr. Carnes in death: Bargen, Larn, Lane and Jack Carnes of Lancaster, SC and Ed and Clyde Carnes of Pageland, SC; and Lois Carnes of Lancaster, Thelma Williams of Pageland, SC, and Sulee Scheider of Claxton, GA.
Prior to retiring from Springs Industries in 1982 after 36 years, Mr. Carnes served for two years in the 445th Company, Civilian Conservation Corps, Cheraw, SC, followed by three years in the United States Army, 50th General Hospital, European Theatre. He was a World War II veteran. He was an active member of Immanuel Baptist Church for over 60 years, where he served in every church office including Deacon, Sunday School Superintendent, Brotherhood President, and many teaching positions.
Visitation with the family of Mr. Carnes will be held at Immanuel Baptist Church beginning at 1pm on Tuesday, March 1, with a Celebration of Life Service immediately following at 2 pm led by Rev. Tim Anderson. Burial with military honors will at Lancaster Memorial Park following the service. Memorials may be made to Immanuel Baptist Church 1152 Great Falls Highway, Lancaster, SC 29720.
