Obituary

LANCASTER, SC::::::::::Rev. Roy Clarence Barnes, age 72, died Saturday, May 8, 2010 at Springs Memorial Hospital. He was born November 22, 1937 in Gainesville, GA, the son of the late C. Glenn Barnes and Lola Malinda Orr Barnes and was the husband of Margie Jarrard Barnes. Rev. Barnes received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Church Music from Furman University. He served as the Minister of Music for First Baptist Church of Lancaster for more than 33 years. He also served as Associate Pastor of First Baptist Church, was the Senior Adult Minister, traveled on numerous Mission trips spanning over 30 years, and served as Deacon after his retirement as Minister of Music. Rev. Barnes' musical career began when he was only 12 years old. He sang with various music groups through the years as a soloist and member including the Singing Churchmen of SC and was a charter member of the Century Men. Rev. Barnes also served as Chaplain of Springs Memorial Hospital, was a member and Past President of the Lions Club and a member of the Rotary Club in his earlier years. Rev. Barnes is survived by his wife of 52 years, Margie Jarrard Barnes, two sons, Joe Barnes and his wife Alison of Aiken, SC and Tim Barnes and his wife Robin of Concord, NC, a brother, Bill Barnes and his wife Janet of Warrensburg, MO, four sisters, Kathleen Ruegsegger of Troy, MI, Margaret Eller of Chamblee, GA, Glendean Butsch of Covington, GA and Betty Gabriel of Gainesville, GA, and five grandchildren, Lindsey, Bailey, Candace, Caleb and Callie Barnes. Rev. Barnes was preceded in death by a sister, Mildred Vaughan. The Celebration of Life Funeral Service for Rev. Barnes will be 11:00 am Wednesday, May 12, 2010 at First Baptist Church of Lancaster by Dr. John Platt with burial to follow at Lancaster Memorial Park. The Family of Rev. Barnes will receive friends from 6:00 - 8:00 pm Tuesday evening, May 11, 2010 at Hartley Funeral Home and suggest memorial contributions be made to First Baptist Church, PO Box 670, Lancaster, SC 29721 or the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210.
