LANCASTER, SC—Mr. Richard Wayne Ray, age 78, quietly entered eternal rest on Saturday, May 24, 2025, at his home surrounded by family.

The son of the late Leroy Ray and Elves Thelma Blackmon Ray was born in Lancaster, SC on December 6, 1946. He accepted Christ at an early age and joined Elgin Baptist Church in Lancaster, SC, and later attended Freedom Freewill Baptist Church.

Richard was a cowboy at heart - most at home in the saddle, riding through open fields. He had a special way with horses, training them with patience and steady hands. He gave each the time and care they needed. It was something he truly loved, and it brought him real peace and joy.

He answered the call of duty and served honorably in the Vietnam War, carrying the weight of that time with quiet strength. Though he rarely spoke of it, his courage was clear, not just in service, but in the way he lived every day.

Richard lived a simple life, worked hard, and loved deeply. Even in his final days, he faced everything with the same courage he always had. He leaves behind a legacy built on quiet strength, courage, and an immeasurable heart.

Left to share these and other memories are his daughter, Rachel Ray of Lancaster, SC; his son, Jason Ray (Richard Louie) of Charlotte, NC.; two sisters, Brenda Ray Perry of Rock Hill, SC; Nancy Ray Adams (Bruce) of Lancaster, SC; and his special friend and companion of 10 years, Linda Johnson of Pageland, SC.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Leroy and Elves Ray; and his brother, Frankie Ray.

The Celebration of Life Service for Richard will be at 11:00 am on Saturday, May 31, 2025, at The Chapel of Burgess Funeral Home. Services will be officiated by Rev. Dr. Bennie L. Stinson and Rev. Reva T. Stinson.

The family will receive friends following the service at Burgess Funeral Home.
