Obituary

EASLEY, SC :::::::: Reverend Jerry Franklin Helms, age 79, died Sunday, June 9, 2013 at Greenville Memorial Hospital. He was born in Lancaster, SC the son of the late William Washington Helms and Alice Mildred Culp Helms. He graduated from Lancaster High School, Davidson College, and Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, VA.

Reverend Helms began his ministry as an Associate Pastor at First Presbyterian Church, Newport News, VA; under the mentorship of Dr. Paul K. Buckles. He went on to serve as Pastor of Eastminster Presbyterian Church in Melbourne, FL, and in 1970 became Pastor of Denbigh Presbyterian Church in Newport News, VA where he served for over 30 years. He was beloved by the Denbigh congregation and surrounding community. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club since 1959 where he began as a charter member of the Peninsula Kiwanis Club. The Reverend Helms was also a highly regarded member of the Presbytery of Eastern Virginia.

Following his retirement Mr. Helms returned to his home state in 2009 where he resided at the Foothills Presbyterian Home in Easley.

Reverend Helms is survived by a sister, Ann H. Gore (Gardner) of Sumter, 2 nephews, Jimmy Helms (Renette) of Rock Hill, and Joey Gore, III (Donna); and three nieces, Susan H. Caskey (Gerald) Barbara G. Segars (Charles) and Elizabeth G. Parkins (Gordon) and their children.

Reverend Helms was preceded in death by a brother, James William "Billy" Helms and sister-in-law Sybil Roberts Helms.

The Celebration of Life Funeral Service for Reverend Helms will be 11:00 am, Thursday, June 13, 2013 at Shiloh ARP Church by Rev. Mark Miller. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The Family of Reverend Helms will receive friends from 10:30 - 11:00 am Thursday in the church Family Life Center and family suggests memorials to Shiloh ARP Church or Denbigh Presbyterian Church, Newport News, VA.
