Obituary

LANCASTER, SC On Saturday, January 7, 2023, Raymond Oscar Mungo went home to our Heavenly Father at age 91. Ray was born March 18, 1931, in Kershaw, South Carolina. His family later moved to Lancaster, South Carolina. He enlisted in the Air Force in January 1951 and was sent to the front line in South Korea where he served as an airplane mechanic. He served in Korea for over a year then returned to South Carolina where he met his future wife. He married Joann Denton, January 29,1954.

Ray is survived by his wife, Joann, daughters, Dr.Pamela Mungo and Martha Mungo Bryant (Russ) and two grandchildren, Dr. Joanna Bryant and Scott Bryant. Also survived by two sisters, Mary Kathryn Dabney, and Peggy Harmon (Earl), and numerous beloved nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by siblings Robert, Meta Payne, Betty Short, Earlene Joyner, Loree Pate.

Ray was a member of the Odd Fellow Fraternal Organization, a Mason, and a Shriner. He has asked that in lieu of flowers donations should be made to Shriners Children Hospital in Greenville.

Ray loved life. He served his God and his church faithfully his whole life. He served as a Deacon and Sunday School teacher at Hyde Park Baptist where they were members for over 40 years.

In 1989 he and Joann served thru The Home Mission Board as volunteer Chaplains for the Port of Tampa Bay, Florida. They served there for 11 years. They returned to Lancaster, where they later became members of Immanuel Baptist Church.

Ray retired from Springs Industries. His greatest joy came from tending to his garden, his flowers, his dogs, and cats. He loved spending his days teaching his children and grandchildren about life. He never met a stranger and was always full of life. His life motto was "When the going gets tough the tough get going." There was never anything he wouldn't try. He was good with his hands and enjoyed working around the house.

We extend appreciation to Dr. Sharp and the caregivers from Agape Hospice who monitored his care these last months. A celebration of Ray's life will be held at Immanuel Baptist Church, Wednesday Jan 11 at 1:00p.m. Visitation will precede the service, starting at 11:30a.m. Graveside will be at Memorial Park Cemetery.
