Mr. Phillip Dean Cleveland, age 75, passed away Wednesday, January 30, 2019 at Piedmont Medical Center. He was born March 8, 1943 in Junction City, Kansas, a son of the late Shelby Cleveland and Ruth Breen Cleveland and the husband of Joan Arlene Cleveland. He was predeceased by his first wife, Nancy Joy Lott Cleveland, who passed away March 12, 2001. Mr. Cleveland enjoyed woodworking, golfing, riding in his little red truck, telling stories, socializing and was very involved in the community. He served as the Commissioner of the Lancaster County Soil and Water Conservation. Mr. Cleveland was a lifetime member and elected as State Chaplin of the Elks Association in Nebraska and was also a Mason. He was a barber at Planters Arcade Barber Shop from 1962-1965, and in Burr Oak and Esbon, KS from 1965-1970. After his career as a barber, he became the owner of Cleveland Grocery. He was the manager for 30 years of the Pizza Hut in Lancaster. He enjoyed sports and was a referee for many basketball and football games in Nebraska and Kansas. Mr. Cleveland was a member of Taylors Grove Baptist Church where he also served as a deacon.
Mr. Cleveland is survived by his wife of 9 years, Joan Arlene Cleveland; two sons, Doug Cleveland (Barbara) of Concord, NC and Dan Cleveland of Burr Oak, KS; a step daughter, Brenda Adams (Rick) of Fort Lawn; five grandchildren, Darrell, Darrin, Cody, Brandy and Carrie; a great grandson, Austin; a brother, Steve Cleveland (Cynde) of Bennington, KS; and two sidekicks, Sam and Jesse.
Mr. Cleveland is preceded in death by a wife, Nancy Joy Lott Cleveland; his parents; and a brother, Blaine Cleveland.
The Celebration of Life Memorial Service for Mr. Cleveland will be 11:00 am, Saturday, February 2, 2019 at Taylors Grove Baptist Church officiated by Rev. Tommy Howell. The family will receive friends from 10:00 am-11:00 am, one hour prior to the service, in the Vestibule area and other times at the home.
An additional Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, February 5, 2019 at Wilson Funeral Home in Minneapolis, KS.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Taylors Grove Baptist Church Building Fund, 2382 Charlotte Highway, Lancaster, SC 29720.
