LANCASTER, SC ~ Mrs. Peggy Hilton Sowell Lucas, age 86, passed away Thursday, September 20, 2018 at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill. She was born February 13, 1932 in Jefferson, SC, a daughter of the late James Gilliam Sowell and Laura Hilton Sowell and was the wife of the late George William Lucas. Mrs. Lucas retired from Louisville Cement Company in Louisville, KY. She was employed with the Lancaster Telephone Company for ten years before moving to Kentucky. She graduated from Flat Creek High School, was a volunteer with Springs Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and a member of the Springs Hospital Senior Circle. She was a very devoted member of Hopewell United Methodist Church and was a member of the Young at Heart.

Mrs. Lucas is survived by her daughter, Teresa Meeks and her husband, Jeff; three grandchildren, William Jason Wemes (Sandy), Jeffrey Allen Wemes (Shirley) and Jeffrey Thomas Meeks; five great grandchildren, Austin Wemes, Hannah Boykin, Kristin Wemes, Ciara Wemes and Cameron Meeks, and an unofficially adopted great grandson, Richard Boo Hammond.

Mrs. Lucas was preceded in death by a very special friend, Pack Horton. They were companions and special friends for nearly 20 years until he passed away in 2016. She was also preceded in death by four brothers, James R. Sowell, Leroy Sowell, Thomas Elmore Sowell and Ira Sowell, and a sister, Ruth Sowell.

The Celebration of Life Funeral Service for Mrs. Lucas will be 3:00 pm Sunday, September 23, 2018 at Hopewell United Methodist Church by Rev. Candice Sloan and Rev. Randy Mellichamp. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
