LANCASTER, SC – Mr. Paul Kourkoubes, age 91, passed away peacefully on October 22, 2026, at his home. He was born in Martins Ferry, Ohio on March 21, 1935. He was the son of the late George Kourkoubes and the late Gertrude Hosenfeld Kourkoubes and was the loving husband of Diana Kempton Kourkoubes.
Mr. Paul was a faithful member of Van Wyck Presbyterian Church. A man of many talents and trades, he enjoyed woodworking, building birdhouses and bird feeders, and even solving jigsaw puzzles. He had a special appreciation for classic cars and took great pride in caring for his own.
Above all, Mr. Paul cherished his family. He was a loving husband, a wonderful father, and a proud grandfather and great-grandfather who treasured the time he spent with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Though he was a quiet and soft-spoken man, he had a special way of making those around him feel loved and cared for. His love was often shown through his actions rather than his words, leaving a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
He enjoyed the familiar comfort of old Westerns playing on the television and the simple pleasures of everyday life. Mr. Paul was a humble man who never needed to draw attention to himself. He was, in every sense, an ordinary man with an extraordinary heart, a good man whose quiet strength, gentle spirit, and unwavering love for his family will never be forgotten.
Mr. Paul is survived by his wife of 70 years, Diana Kourkoubes; his son, Peter Kourkoubes (Cindy); his daughter, Paula Durkee; his four grandchildren, Kristen Waid (Graham), Mike Durkee (Nicole), Megan Mata (Chris), and Michael Kourkoubes (Kaylin); and seven great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents, George and Gertrude Kourkoubes; his son-in-law, Scott Durkee; his brother, James McIninch; and his two sisters, Despina Haller and Eileen Swaney.
The Celebration of Life Funeral Service for Mr. Paul will be held at 12:00pm on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, at The Chapel of Burgess Funeral Home officiated by Rev. Carson Montgomery. Entombment will follow at Lakeland Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., at Burgess Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, for those who wish, memorial contributions may be made to Van Wyck Presbyterian Church, 5140 Old Hickory Rd, Lancaster, SC 29720.
