Obituary

INDIAN LAND, SC::::::::: Mr. Oliver Stanley Johnson, Jr. (Stan), age 70, of Arnold, MD, passed away on January 13, 2015 in Indian Land, SC after a six month battle with cancer. He was the beloved husband of Kathleen Anne (Mullin), dear father of Deanne Johnson and her fiancé James Stephens, and Thomas Johnson and his wife Robin, loving brother of Hugh Johnson and his wife, Amelia of North Brunswick NJ, Lawrence Johnson and his late wife, Gail of Alexandria, VA, Ward Johnson of Indian Land, SC, and Willa Costello and her husband James of Brick, NJ; devoted grandfather of Logan and Landry Johnson with numerous nieces and nephews.

Stan was born August 17, 1944 to the late Thelma and Oliver Johnson in Alexandria, VA, but spent most of his early life in Little Silver, NJ. He attended Rutgers University where he joined the ROTC program and was a member of Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity while earning his BSEE followed by his MSEE at the University of Pennsylvania. After his marriage to Kathy in 1968, he served in the Army Reserves as a 2nd Lieutenant for two years and eventually moved to Anne Arundel County in 1973 where he was employed at NSA in Ft. Meade for 29 years holding various managerial positions in the area of information systems security solutions and was respected as a leader, mentor and friend by his colleagues. While serving there, he attended the Harvard Senior Executive Fellows Institute as well as the Federal Executive Institute. Upon retiring in 1996, he continued to serve the intelligence community as a consultant to Motorola, General Dynamics and Booz Allen Hamilton in the area of information security.

Among Stan's interests, he enjoyed mentally challenging puzzles, tennis and for many years was membership chairperson for the Anne Arundel County Tennis Association, golfing, hiking, traveling, yearly vacations to the beach with family, and especially spending time with his grandchildren, Logan and Landry. He also liked to watch sporting events (NFL, NBA and college basketball, golf, tennis). He will surely be missed for his quick wit, fair mindedness, insightfulness, and gentle spirit.

A funeral service is 11:00 am Friday, January 16, 2015 at Burgess Funeral Home, 1800 Charlotte Highway, Lancaster SC with a visitation at 10:30 am at the funeral home. A memorial service will also be held at Embury United Methodist Church in Little Silver NJ on January 31, 2015 at 11 AM.
