LANCASTER, SC:::::::::::Mr. Norman Victor Smith, Jr., age 91, died Thursday, November 20, 2014. He was born June 30, 1923 in Simpsonville, SC, the son of the late Norman Victor Smith, Sr. and Nivia Owings Smith and was the husband of Evelyn Newton Smith. Mr. Smith was a 1948 graduate of Clemson University with a degree in Textile Engineering. He served as a radio operator and tail gunner in the Army Air Force during WWII and was the recipient of a Purple Heart. He retired from Springs Industries as manager of the Foundry and Machine shop and was a member of Shiloh A.R.P. Church.
Mr. Smith is survived by his wife of 68 years, Evelyn Newton Smith, a son, Trey Smith and his wife Janice of Lancaster, two daughters, Helen Williams and her husband Bryan of Clemson and Susan Smith Long and her friend Chris Broughton of Charlotte, four grandchildren, Matthew Smith and his wife Allison, Reid Smith, Andy Robinson and his wife Jennifer and Alison Long, and two great grandchildren, Bennett Ann Robinson, Lucas Archer Smith and another on the way.
Mr. Smith was preceded in death by three sisters, Kathryn Harrington, Emily Smith and Eleanor Rodgers.
The Celebration of Life Funeral Service for Mr. Smith will be 2:00 pm, Saturday, November 22, 2014 at Shiloh A.R.P. Church by Rev. Tommy Howell and Rev. Rus Wimmer. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The Family will receive friends from 5:00 -7:00 pm Friday evening, November 21, 2014 at Burgess Funeral Home, 1800 Charlotte Highway, Lancaster and suggest memorial contributions be made to Shiloh A.R.P. Church, 346 Shiloh Unity Road, Lancaster, SC 29720.
