LANCASTER, SC – Master Deputy Michael “Mike” Patrick Hirtle, age 59, passed away on May 10, 2026, at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born on June 22, 1966, in Hartford, Connecticut and was the son of the late Arthur Owen Hirtle and the late Helena Noonan Hirtle and the husband of Judy Roberts Hirtle.

Mike was a devoted public servant whose life was centered around serving and protecting others. He began his law enforcement career with Mecklenburg County, where he served for three years, followed by 18 years with the Lancaster City Police Department, and six and a half years with the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office, where he faithfully completed his journey in law enforcement. This December would have marked 25 years of dedicated service.

Mike was truly one of the best of the best, not only as an officer, but as a person. He had a heart full of compassion and never hesitated to help anyone in need. He poured so much of himself into his community, often going far beyond the badge to help those struggling find safety, hope, and a better path forward. Mike’s servant’s heart, kindness, and unwavering dedication to others will never be forgotten by the countless lives he touched.

Mike is survived by his wife of 32 years; Judy Hirtle; his two sons, Philip Michael Roberts and Jeremy Hirtle; and his brother, Art Hirtle (Denise); and many brothers and sisters in blue.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Helena Hirtle.

Mike was the true definition of selflessness. In keeping with his humble wishes, no formal service will be held; however, the family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 17, 2026, at Burgess Funeral Home.

Mike had a deep love for animals, especially dogs and was always willing to lend a helping hand to the local animal shelter. Whether transporting animals for the Lancaster SPCA or assisting with Animal Control calls, he was always there when needed. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Lancaster SPCA, P.O. Box 3042, Lancaster, SC 29721.
