Obituary

LANCASTER, SC::::::::: Mr. Marvin Gene Canterbury, age 84, died Saturday, September 3, 2016 at Springs Memorial Hospital. He was born July 22, 1932 in Harlan County, Kentucky, a son of the late Oscar Clarence Canterbury and Irene Theresa Sauer Canterbury Hicks and was the husband of Charlene Gainer Canterbury. Mr. Canterbury retired after serving 20 years from the United States Army, served in the Korean War and received the Korean Service Medal with a bronze service star. He also was awarded the National Defense Medal with a bronze service star, an Expert Badge with Carbine Bar with Missle and Rifle Bar, and the United Nations Service Medal and was also trained to fly helicopters. He moved to Lancaster from Virginia Beach, VA in 1973 and opened Burger King as their manager. He left Burger King to work with Liberty Life Insurance Company as their sales manager and retired after 35 years of service. He later returned to work at Burger King and retired again in 2009. Mr. Canterbury was very active in the Lancaster County Schools when his children were attending. He enjoyed traveling and watching the South Carolina Gamecocks play football and baseball. He enjoyed dancing with Charlene, loved spending time with all of his grandchildren and was a member of First Baptist Church.

Mr. Canterbury is survived by his wife of 48 years, Charlene Canterbury; his children, Teresa Willis and her husband David, Tim Hunter and his wife Joy, and Karen Hunter Owens and her husband Mike; five grandchildren, Brandi McBain and her husband Brett, Amber Smith and her husband Wes, Daulton Willis, Erika Willis and Crystal Christopher and her husband Ryan; great-grandchildren, Alicia Huffman, Skylar Huffman, Nick Smith, Marissa Smith, Gabriel McBain and Colton Christopher; two sisters, Vivian Bertha Canterbury of Gloucester Point, VA and Ella Fay Benzel of Norfolk, VA and one brother, Kenneth Wayne Hamby of Vinton, VA.

Mr. Canterbury was preceded in death by two sisters, Juanita Lucille Hodges and Dalphina Lois Newlun and two brothers, Carl Max Canterbury and Otis Dennis Hamby.

The Celebration of Life Funeral Service for Mr. Canterbury will be at 2:00 pm Friday, September 9, 2016 at First Baptist Church by Rev. Randy Hatcher, Dr. Harold Owens and Rev. Bill Sumner with burial to follow at New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery with military honors.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 2:00 pm Friday at the church and suggest in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to Parkinsons Research Donation Processing, The Michael J.
