Obituary

LANCASTER, SC::::::::::Mr. Marvin Eugene Ashley, Sr., age 72, died Monday, July 12, 2010 at Presbyterian Hospital - Harris Hospice Unit in Charlotte from complications following a stroke in 2009. He was born March 16, 1938 in Charlotte, the son of the late James Albert Ashley and Kate McLean Ashley and was the husband of Carleen Courtney Ashley. Mr. Ashley was a proud graduate of East Mecklenburg High School - Class of '56. He retired from Lucent Technologies after 37 years of service where he was affectionately known as Sweet Pea' and Shug' and was also a farmer raising cows and goats. He was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church and served as Sunday school teacher. He was a former member of Newell Baptist Church in Charlotte where he served as Deacon and Sunday school teacher and served our great country in the United States Navy Reserve from 1952 - 1963.Mr. Ashley is survived by his wife, Carleen Courtney Ashley of the home; a son, Marvin Ashley, Jr. and his wife Gwen of Rocky Point, NC; two daughters, Phyllis Stevenson and husband Glenn of Fairmont, WV and Kelly Ashley of Greensboro, NC; a brother, Everett Ashley of China Grove, NC; a sister, Dianne Ashley Russell of Charlotte, and five grandchildren, Glenn Stevenson, III, Nathan Stevenson, and Aaron Stevenson, Milyssa Ashley and Marvin Ashley, III.Mr. Ashley was preceded in death by a brother, James Bradford Ashley.The Celebration of Life Funeral Service for Mr. Ashley will be 11:00 am, Tuesday, July 20, 2010 at Bethlehem Baptist Church by Rev. Reggie Hopkins with private burial to follow in Charlotte Memorial Gardens. A memorial service for Mr. Ashley will be held at 3:00 pm, Tuesday afternoon, July 20, 2010 at Newell Baptist Church in Charlotte by Rev. Chris Hilliard. The Family of Mr. Ashley will receive friends from 10:00 - 11:00 am Tuesday morning, July 20, 2010 in the Family Life Center of Bethlehem Baptist Church and suggest memorial contributions be made to Bethlehem Baptist Church Building Fund, 1841 North Rocky River Road, Lancaster, SC 29720.
