Obituary

LANCASTER, SC:::::::::- Mrs. Martha Binion Yarbrough passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 26th at the age of 96 with her two sons Sanford (Jr.) and Michael England at her side. Martha was born in Evergreen, AL on April 5, 1919. For the last four and a half years, she resided at Morningside of Lancaster enjoying the company of her three great grandsons Graham, Brigham, and Brennan, her granddaughter Kristin, and her daughter-in-law Rebecca. She is additionally survived by her granddaughters Jennifer and Courtney.

A long-time resident of Macon, GA, Martha was married to the late C.A. Yarbrough who is survived by Trip Yarbrough and Susan Dragger of Sea Island, GA. Prior to her relocating to Macon, Martha was married to Col. Sanford Patrick England, Sr. (Pat) who passed away in 1974. Martha and Pat met at the Alpha Gamma Delta house at Auburn University in late 1941, and we were married in February 1942, at the Evergreen Baptist Church, in Marthas hometown of Evergreen, AL.

In their 32 years of marriage, they lived in Clearwater, FL, Fort Bragg, NC, Governors Island, NY, Fort Drum, NY, Arlington, VA, Boston, MA, Maxwell, AFB, Tyndall, AFB, Louveciennes, France, Frankfurt and Heidelberg, Germany, and Southern Pines, NC. While living in Germany, Martha became fluent in German.

Marthas academic achievements included postgraduate studies in microbiology at Auburn University, a BA from the University of Alabama in sociology with a minor in chemistry and biochemistry. She was a graduate of Evergreen High School in 1937. Martha worked throughout her life as a teacher and a medical social worker for Arlington County, VA, the state of Florida, and as the Social Services Director for Coliseum Park Medical Center in Macon, GA.

Martha was known for her social graces and charm, and she strived to always set an example for others and inspired many, especially young women, to pursue their aspirations through educational achievement. She firmly believed that a lady must at all times maintain a positive social presence so as preserve the decencies of life for the enjoyment of all. Martha was member of Alpha Gamma Delta social sorority where she met her lifelong friend and Maid of Honor, Mary Rogers Williams, who encouraged her to relocate to Macon, GA after Patrick passed away.

She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, numerous military and civilian womens clubs and social organizations in Washington, DC, Macon, and Clearwater, and was an avid bridge player and golfer.

The Celebration of Life Memorial Service for Martha will be 3:00 PM Saturday, April 9, 2016 at The Chapel of Burgess Funeral Home by Father Michael Hubb.

Martha will be permanently interned at Arlington National Cemetery with her first husband Col. Sanford P. England, Sr. along with the members of the England family in Arlington (graveside services are to be announced at a later date).
