Obituary

LANCASTER, SC:::::::::::Mr. Marion DeWitt "Mac" McGee, passed away Sunday, May 10, 2015 at Springs Memorial Hospital. He was 89. "Mac" as he was known to his many friends and associates, was born in Lancaster and resided there his entire life except for four years during World War II and five years spent in Columbus, Ohio.

A decorated Navy veteran during the war, Mac piloted a landing craft with military troops aboard to Normandy Beach twice on D-Day, 1944 and returned with the wounded to a Navy hospital ship. He was later awarded a Purple Heart for wounds received that fateful day. After the war, Mac and his young family moved to Columbus where his family resided. In 1951, he returned to Lancaster where he co-owned Mac's Lunch on Main Street for many years.

Mac spent many years in the insurance business in various positions. The final 25 years were associated with Kanawha Insurance Company. He retired in 1990 as Vice-President of Marketing where he was affectionately known as "Mr. Kanawha" by his co-workers and peers.

He was the oldest son of the late Willie and Bertha Knight McGee of Columbus.

Mac is survived by his childhood sweetheart and bride of 70 years, Elizabeth Knight McGee; two sons, Johnny McGee (Pat) of Rock Hill and Keith McGee (Mandy) of Lancaster; and one daughter, Anita McDow (George) of Lancaster; four grandchildren, Anslee McDow, Maggie McDow and Ryan McGee, all of Lancaster and Andy McGee of Rock Hill; and one great granddaughter, Ellie Rose McGee of Rock Hill; one brother, William McGee and three sisters, Bobbi Abbuggese, Margaret Seitz and Carol D'Ippdito all of Columbus; one uncle, Robert Knight of Lancaster; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mac was preceded in death by his oldest daughter, Donna McGee.

Funeral Services will be held Thursday, May 14, 2015 at 3:00 pm at First Baptist Church, 300 S. Market Street, Lancaster, SC with the Rev. Randy Hatcher and Rev. W. C. Wallace, Jr. officiating. Burial will be at Lancaster Memorial Park.

The Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church in the Family Life Center and in lieu of flowers, suggest memorial contributions be made to First Baptist Church, PO Box 670, Lancaster, SC 29721. The family wishes to offer special thanks to his nephew, Randy Knight, who assisted with his care the final four months of his life.
