LANCASTER, SC::::::::::: Mrs. Maggielene Crenshaw Phillips, age 96, widow of the late Clyde R. Phillips, Sr., passed away Tuesday, March 8, 2016 at her home. She was born September 3, 1919 in Lancaster County, a daughter of the late Luther McDuffie and Bertha Brazell Crenshaw. Mrs. Phillips was a beloved daughter, farmers wife and mother. She grew up in an age when a farm and garden were essential for ones livelihood and to provide food for the family. She worked tirelessly in the summer canning and freezing hundreds of containers of fruits and vegetables to ensure that sufficient food was on hand to feed her family and to share with others through the months before the growing season began again. She also worked a number of years at Springs Grace Plant. She was a superlative cook for her family and she also shared that talent with others in need or bereaved. She turned her hands to anything that she could help withshe picked cotton, built fences and helped bring in wood or coal to fuel the old cook stove and to provide warmth during the winter. She was an accomplished seamstress who made clothing for her entire family and even found time to sew for others. She had an avid love for flowers. Her yard was a show place of blossoms and neat shrubbery. For years, she shared the beauty of her yard by placing flowers in the church on Sunday mornings. She also shared bouquets and cuttings with all who visited her.
She was a faithful member of Oak Ridge ARP Church where she taught the Childrens Sunday School Class in her early years. She joined in every phase of church life. She provided meals for those in need or bereaved. She was also a willing worker, present for cleanup and work days at the church. Her special love was singing in the choir which she did for many years.
Mrs. Phillips is survived by her daughters, Mary Emma Knight, Elsie Phillips Lucas, and her son, Clyde R. Phillips, Jr. (Carol), her daughter in law, Mary Ann Phillips; her grandchildren, Mark Phillips, Angie Phillips, Brian Phillips, Ginger Phillips Patterson, Jeff Lucas and Crystal Lucas Brown; her great grandchildren, Brooke Lucas, Erin Munn, Matthew Phillips, Connor Patterson, Samantha Brown and Spencer Brown. She is also survived by a brother, Jesse Crenshaw (Janett).
Mrs. Phillips was preceded in death by a daughter, Joyce Phillips and a son, Roger Phillips. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Teresa Crenshaw Hinson and her brothers, Ray Crenshaw, Elliott Crenshaw, Gurley Crenshaw, Windell Crenshaw, Layton Crenshaw, Roddy Crenshaw, and Billy Crenshaw.
The Celebration of Life Funeral Service for Mrs. Phillips will be 2:00 pm Thursday, March 10, 2016 at Oakridge ARP Church by Rev. Glenn Welsford. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends following the graveside service at the church and suggest in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Oakridge ARP Church, 2774 McIlwain Road, Heath Springs, SC 29058.
