LANCASTER, SC::::: Mrs. Lucy Moore Crenshaw, age 100, passed away on Sunday, August 24, 2014 at Transitions Life Care in Raleigh, NC. Lucy resided in the Van Wyck community, Lancaster, SC. Lucy was born on September 8, 1913, in Union County, NC to the late Mattie Laney Moore and William Jackson Moore. She was the youngest of six children and was preceded in death by her brothers Claude, Carl, and Grant Moore and her sisters, Gertrude Moore and Edna Antenucci.

Lucy live in Weddington, NC, all of her youth, attending Wesley Chapel High School graduating as salutatorian of her class. She attended East Carolina Teachers College majoring in primary education and attended teacher recertification summer schools at Appalachian State University and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

In 1937 she married John Niven Crenshaw and moved to Lancaster County, SC. They were married for 65 years and had one child, Margaret. John Niven preceded his beloved wife in February 2002. She is survived by her daughter, Margaret, and her husband Dr. John Riddle of Raleigh, NC; one grandchild, Erika Rosenthal and husband Richard of Raleigh, NC, and one great-grandchild, Heather Mangrum, also of Raleigh.

Lucy served as a primary school teacher for more than twenty years. In 1937 she began teaching first grade at Fairview School in Union County, NC, a new school between Monroe and Concord. Even though she enjoyed her job, she resigned at the end of the year because of the long drive from Van Wyck. In 1943, she taught at Osceola, a one room school with grades one through six. With the help of some of the mothers a hot lunch was served using a big iron stove that heated the building. When Osceola was consolidated with Belair School, Lucy taught first or second grade there until Belair was consolidated with Indian Land, where she spent most of her teaching years with second graders. She also taught at Weddington Elementary school. She loved each and every one of her students and took great pleasure in seeing them succeed. In her senior years, nothing pleased her more than to have her former students come to visit.

She loved to travel covering much of Europe with her daughter and sister, Gertrude. The highlight of her travels was a trip to Hawaii with Gertrude until the tour bus in which they were traveling plunged down a mountain side. Lucy miraculously escaped with just bruises and broken glasses.

Active in both her church and Methodist women, Lucy possessed a strong faith, which guided her throughout her life. Many thanks go to the members of Osceola church, who made Lucy's last years more comfortable knowing she was not forgotten.

The family wishes to thank Marie Matundo for her loving care of "Miss Lucy" for more than a year and also recognize the outstanding care and compassion the family received from Transitions Life Care in Raleigh.

The Celebration of Life Funeral Service for Lucy will be 11:00 am Thursday, August 28, 2014 at Osceola United Methodist Church by Rev. Harry Gindhart, Jr. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 - 11:00 in the church social hall. The family request that in lieu of flowers, friends are asked to kindly consider memorial donations to Osceola United Methodist Church, c/o Lynn Griffin, 380 Charles Pettus Road, Lancaster, SC 29720.
