LANCASTER, SC:::::::Kathryn "Katie" Mayfield Scannell, age 84, passed away peacefully on July 4, 2014 at her home at Morningside of Lancaster. She was born May 12, 1930, in Denmark, SC, to Marion Riley Mayfield and William Dowling Mayfield.
Katie earned her BA and MAT degrees from Winthrop University. After graduation she worked in the lab at Celanese in Rock Hill and later taught for more than 20 years at Rock Hill High School. She was an active member of Woodland United Methodist Church from 1948 until 2009, where she served on many committees, as a Sunday School teacher, and in the choir. She continued her love of music by singing in the Morningside of Lancaster choir. A lover of history and genealogy, Katie was a member of historical societies, UDC, and DAR. She served as Registrar for the Catawba Chapter of DAR for a number of years.
She is survived by a son, William E. Scannell of Bessemer City, NC; a daughter, Kathryn A. Hayes (Robin T. Hayes), of Lancaster, SC; grandchildren: James A. Hayes and Katherine H. Denham of Lancaster, SC; Daniel P. Scannell of Pasadena, MD; Adam V. Scannell of Cramerton, NC; and William J. Scannell of Herndon, VA; and sisters, Marion M. McGlaun of Woodstock, VA and Eleanor M. Wright of Gilbert, SC; as well as 5 great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Mrs. Scannell was predeceased by her husband, William H. Scannell; her parents; and her sisters: Christabel M. Zorn, Caroline M. Proctor, Elizabeth M. Murray, Sara M. Terry, and Wilma M. Bagwell.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. at Woodland United Methodist Church in Rock Hill on Friday, July 18, 2014 officiated by the Reverend Eddie Usher. Visitation with the family will follow at the church.
The family wishes to thank the compassionate and loving caregivers at Morningside of Lancaster for helping to make Katie's last years busy and happy. They also are very grateful to Providence Care for their support and medical assistance during the final days of Katie's life.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Mrs. Scannell's memory to Woodland UMC, 801 N.
