LANCASTER, SC:::::::::::: Mr. Johnny Edward Hinson, 84, died Tuesday, October 4, 2016 at Morningside of Lancaster. He was born December 20, 1931 in Kershaw County, the son of the late Dan Hinson and Allie Horton Hinson and the grandson of the late John E. Horton and Arria Eubanks Horton. He was the husband of Margaret Johnson Hinson. He was a long time active member of the Lancaster Second Baptist Church where he served faithfully as Deacon, Treasurer and on various committees. Mr. Hinson retired from the Lancaster Telephone Company in June 1994 as Residential Services Manager with over 41 years of service. He retired from the military in 1983 with 35 years of service. He served in the Army during the Korean War and in the South Carolina Army National Guard. He was the first South Carolina Army National Guardsman to be selected into the Command Sergeant Major program and retired as the State Command Sergeant Major. He was an inaugural inductee for the South Carolina Guard Enlisted Hall of Fame. He was the Senior Enlisted Soldier and advisor for enlisted matters to the Adjutant General of South Carolina. Mr. Hinson was a member of the Lancaster Rotary Club for 46 years and was a Paul Harris Fellow. He was very active in several business and civic organizations for many years. He served as Chairman of the Cancer Fund Drive of Lancaster and also served as Vice President and member of the Board of Directors for the Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce. He was a life member of the Jackson Masonic Lodge #53, York Rite Masonic Bodies and Hejaz Shrine Temple.
Mr. Hinson is survived by his wife of 63 years, Margaret Johnson Hinson; two daughters, Sherry H. Baucom and her husband Darrell of Lancaster and Tammy H. Rothell and her husband Eric of Seneca; two sisters, Betty Horton Gainer of Lancaster and Marguerite Horton Baker of Beaufort, SC; four grandchildren, Jonathan A. Baucom, Gavan D. Baucom and his wife Allison, Jared H. Rothell and Seth A. Rothell; and two great grandsons, Aaron Mabry and Cale Mabry and a great granddaughter, Arya Baucom.
Mr. Hinson was preceded in death by three brothers, Cecil L. Horton, Bazel E. Horton and Hazel S. Red Horton.
The Celebration of Life Funeral Service for Mr. Hinson will be 3:00 pm Sunday, October 9, 2016 at Second Baptist Church by Dr. Brian Saxon, Rev. Larry Helm and Dr. Bert Welch. Burial with military honors will follow at Lancaster Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 1:30 3:00 pm Sunday at the church and suggest memorial contributions be made to Second Baptist Church Building Fund or Global Harvest off Lancaster, 1426 Great Falls Highway, Lancaster, SC 29720 or to the Vasculitis (Wegeners Granulomatosis) Foundation, PO Box 28660, Kansas City, MO 64188.
