MARSHALL, NC – Mr. John Lee Sowell, Sr., age 88, passed away Tuesday, November 11, 2025. He was born April 25, 1937, in Lancaster, SC, son of the late Dorch Lee Sowell and the late Susie Laney Sowell and was the husband of the late Carol Usher Sowell. Mr. Sowell was the owner and operator of Sowell Electric. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy. Mr. Sowell loved his Harley motorcycles, hunting, racing and being a part of the race team. He enjoyed his very active life and loved spending time with his family. Mr. Sowell was a member of Abundant Mercy Church.

Mr. Sowell is survived by his son, John Lee Sowell, Jr. (Stacia); grandchildren, Shelly Chandler (Jeremy) and Cassy Bass (Paul); great grandchildren, Cason, Noah, Lane, and Bailey; brother, Billy Frank Sowell (Donna); sister, Betty Cauthen; sister-in-law, Marcine Sowell; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Carol Sowell; his parents, Dorch and Susie Sowell; brother, Gilliam Sowell; and sister, Ann Louise Sowell.

The Celebration of Life Service for Mr. Sowell will be 2:00 pm, Sunday, November 16, 2025, at The Chapel of Burgess Funeral Home officiated by Rev. Steve Anglin. Burial will follow at Lancaster Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 – 7:00 pm, Saturday, November 15, 2025, at Burgess Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, for those who wish, memorials may be made to Shriner's Hospitals for Children, 2900 Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL 33607.
