LANCASTER, SC ~ SHREVE, John Fred, age 85 of Fort Mill, South Carolina passed away on Thursday, July 22, 2021, after a short illness. He was born on August 29, 1936 in Union City, Pennsylvania. John is survived by his wife of 45 years, Lynda (nee:Boarts) Shreve. Brother to Alice and Betty Jo. Loving father to Elyn Selu, Danny (Sally) Devereaux, Tom (Bonette) Smith, David Smith, Tiffany (John) Woods, Sean Taylor, and Mary Taylor. Beloved grandfather to Daniel, Amanda, Derek, Erika, Kayla, Viki, Gage, Matthew, David, Chris, Jamie, Kaya, Kari and Eli, along with many great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents Robert Ian and Olga (Laskaris), his sister Mary Olga and his brother Robert along with many other family and friends.
John joined the fire department when he was 16 years old and was the Fire Chief of Union City for many years. He was a proud graduate of Oklahoma State University. After graduating college, he started a business (Fire Inc.) that designed and created sprinkler heads for manufacturers. He then went on to write the fire code laws for the state of Florida in 1971 along with writing many textbooks that have been used in the fire industry for years. He taught Fire Science at several Universities in Louisiana, Tennessee, and North Carolina. He retired as the Fire Chief of General Electric (Evendale, Ohio). He served on many fire departments across the country, both full time and volunteer, until he retired in 2001.
Lynda and John were able to travel to many places after retirement including Greece, Holland, and Italy along with taking many other local trips. John loved spending his time with his family, friends and eating good Greek food. His laughter was contagious and the first thing people noticed about him. He made lifelong friends wherever he went and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
There will not be formal services, however, the family will be planning a celebration of life for this Fall.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you make direct donations to help with expenses with Lynda's assisted living care or make donations to/support your local fire department/EMS. Make checks payable to an immediate family member.
