LANCASTER, SC ~ John Andrew Osterberg, age 85, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, April 15, 2021 at his home.  John was born July 14, 1935 in the Bronx, New York.  He was the son of the late Andrew and Eva Osterberg immigrants from Finland.  John graduated from Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, NY, served briefly in the United States Navy, and subsequently worked in the US Navy shipyard.  He later sailed for United Fruit and employed by American Bureau of Shipping.  Raised in Staten Island, NY, lived in Little Egg Harbor, NJ, Myrtle Beach, SC and Lancaster, SC.  John was active in the Gideons International Organization since 1985 placing Scriptures and doing distributions.  He recently joined the "Just in Time" senior band in Lancaster playing his harmonica and performing in senior centers, nursing homes, and community events.  John had a special place in his heart for seniors.  He loved the Lord and His Word and enjoyed being His servant.

John is survived by his wife, Anna Czeladyn Osterberg; his son, John E. Osterberg (Michelle); four grandsons, Eric, Andrew, Ryan, and Daniel Osterberg; several nieces and nephews; and extended family.

John was preceded in death by his late wife, Elaine; his parents; and his sister, Vera.

The Celebration of Life Service for John will be 11:00 am Tuesday, April 20, 2021 at The Chapel of Burgess Funeral Home officiated by Pastor Sharon King.  Burial will follow at Lancaster Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 pm Monday, April 19, 2021 at Burgess Funeral Home.  For those who desire, memorials may be made to the Gideons International, PO Box 1302, Lancaster, SC 29721.
