Obituary

CHARLESTON, SC – John Wesley Carter, age 89, died Saturday, April 1, 2023 at his residence in Charleston, SC. John was a lifetime resident of Lancaster until he moved to Charleston a few years ago to live with family. He was married to Patricia Clark Carter for 54 years until she died in 2010.

Born June 15, 1933, John was a very loving man, and was very loved by many. He never met a stranger, and always enjoyed meeting new people and learning new things. It seemed he knew most people in Lancaster. He was retired as a letter carrier from the U.S. Postal Service. John loved serving his country in the U.S. Air Force and the Air Force Reserve, where he reached the rank of Senior Chief Master Sargent. He retired from the Air Force after 39 plus years. John was a member and Deacon of First Baptist Church of Lancaster.

John was preceded in death by his parents, John Ervin Carter and Nell Devinney Carter; and his brothers, Donald and Bobby Carter. He is survived by his children, Carol Carter Hogue (Marty) of Charleston, SC, Johnna Carter Legendre (Jim), of Hemingway, SC, and Ervin Carter (Sheila) of Lancaster. He is also survived by eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren; plus his sister, Jane Boggs, of Lancaster; and his brother, Roy Carter, of Rock Hill.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 – 11:00 am Tuesday, April 4, 2023, at Burgess Funeral Home. The Celebration of Life Graveside Service will follow the visitation at Lancaster Memorial Park officiated by Rev. Marty Hogue and Rev. Jim Legendre.
