LANCASTER, SC::::::::: Mr. John Bowens, age 78, of 2616 N. Rocky River Road, went to be with Jesus on Tuesday, January 11, 2011. He was born September 24, 1932 in Paintsville, KY, the son of the late Morgan Bowens and Goldie Smith Bowens and was the husband of Cris Charles Bowens. Mr. Bowens was a private pilot in his spare time; enjoyed learning to play the guitar and experimenting with wind energy; and served our great country in the United States Army during the Korean War. Mr. Bowens is survived by his wife, Cris Bowens, a son, Ricky John Bowens and his wife Susan of Colonial Beach, VA, a daughter, Vickie Lyn Hartberger and her husband Buddy of Lancaster, 4 grandchildren; Laurin Bowens, Melissa Cockerille, Megan Hartberger and Matthew Hartberger, 3 great grandchildren, David Malachi and Cassie; a sister, Irene Bridgett of Paintsville, KY and several nieces and nephews.Mr. Bowens was preceded in death by a daughter, Rita Sue Bowens, 2 brothers, Daniel Bowens and Miles Bowens and 2 sisters, Opal Staniford and Gladys Maddaugh. The Celebration of Life Graveside Funeral Service for Mr. Bowens will be 12:00 noon Friday, January 14, 2011 at Fort Jackson National Cemetery with Military Honors. The Family of Mr. Bowens will receive friends from 3:00 - 4:00 Thursday, January13, 2011 at Hartley Funeral Home and the family suggests memorials be sent to Monroe Bay Colonial Assembly of God, Colonial Beach, VA.
