Obituary

INDIAN LAND, SC ~ On June 22, 2023, Jerry Duncan passed away peacefully at the age of 74 at the Levine & Dickson Hospice House in Charlotte, after a 20-year battle with Parkinson's disease.  Jerry was born on March 21, 1949, in Marion, NC, to Stanley and Louise (Queen) Duncan.  He was raised in Marion and graduated from Marion High School in 1967.  He attended college at North Carolina State University and graduated in May of 1971 with a Bachelor of Science in Textiles.  Shortly thereafter he married the love of his life, Gail Fleming, on June 27, 1971.  They had two children, Cara Elizabeth (born in 1975) and Eric Michael (born in 1979).  Jerry had a long career in the apparel industry working in quality assurance.  Some of the companies he worked for included Lands' End, Russell Athletic, and Jockey International.  Through his career he was able to travel all over the world, including to Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Central and South America.

Jerry loved his family.  He grew up surrounded by his extended family and enjoyed frequent family gatherings, Christmas celebrations, and yearly trips to the beach.  Gail shared his love of family, and throughout their marriage they always put family first.  Jerry was so proud of his children and grandchildren and always wanted to support them by attending their sporting events and music performances.  He also enjoyed family vacations, including trips to national parks when he was raising his family, and to the Outer Banks, Myrtle Beach, and Lake Lure over the past several years with his children and grandchildren.

Jerry's other love in life was bluegrass music.  He started playing music with his college buddies at NC State when he taught himself how to play the washtub bass.  They formed a band called Cane Creek Reunion and made a record together.  The band members became life-long friends and continued to stay in touch and play together intermittently over the years.  Jerry also played the upright bass for the Wisconsin River Bluegrass Boys for many years when he lived in Wisconsin.

Jerry is preceded in death by his father, Stanley.  He is survived by his mother Louise; his wife Gail; his two children, Cara Moll (Andy) and Eric Duncan (Lisa); his three grandchildren, Cam and Ali Moll, and Ava Duncan; his sister Susan Caudill (Phil); his brother-in-law Robert Fleming (Roxanne); one aunt, one niece, two nephews, and several cousins.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday July 1 at 2 pm at the Burgess Funeral Home in Lancaster, SC.  Visitation will start at 1 pm.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice & Palliative Care - Charlotte region at https://www.hpccr.org/giving or Parkinson Association of the Carolinas at https://www.parkinsonassociation.org/parkinsons-association-donation/
