IN LOVING MEMORY OF
James "Jt"
Mills
October 31, 1937 – January 7, 2026
LANCASTER, SC – Mr. James Thomas "JT" Mills, age 88, passed away Wednesday, January 7, 2026. He was born October 31, 1937, in Chesterfield, SC, a son of the late Bert F. Mills and the late Nancy "Louise" Jordan Mills and was the husband of the late Linda Keye Mills for 65 years.
JT was a devoted man of faith and an active member of Springhill Baptist Church, where he faithfully helped deliver meals to those who were homebound. He was also a former member of Second Baptist Church. His church and his faith were central to his life and guided how he served others each day.
JT's journey to his diploma is a powerful testament to the fact that it is never too late to redefine one's legacy. By returning to Lancaster High School as an adult, he transformed what many would see as a closed chapter into a profound milestone of perseverance. His commitment to attending night classes after a full day's responsibilities speaks to a rare kind of discipline, one fueled not by the expectations of youth, but by a personal drive for self-betterment. His graduation was more than just an academic completion; it was a triumphant reclaiming of his potential, proving that the pursuit of knowledge remains a noble endeavor at any age. JT stands as an inspiration to the entire Lancaster community, embodying the belief that the finish line is just as sweet, no matter when you cross it.
JT retired from Springs Industries, where he dedicated 45 years of service as a Control Maintenance Technician. His strong work ethic and commitment were evident throughout his career and carried into every aspect of his life.
JT found great joy in the outdoors and could often be found in his shop woodworking, a place where his creativity and craftsmanship shined. He especially enjoyed building bluebird houses, many of which he later sold. He loved watching birds, spending time in God's creation, and metal detecting along the beach.
A true sports enthusiast, JT cheered passionately for the Green Bay Packers, the Atlanta Braves, and The South Carolina Gamecocks, and he was also a NASCAR fan who enjoyed watching the races. He took pride in his 1950 Ford, which he enjoyed showing at car shows that earned him many awards. JT also loved watching The Andy Griffith Show and could often quote it or relate its lessons to his own life.
Music was another deep passion of JT's life. He had a special love and talent for playing the guitar alongside his friends—a gift that he proudly passed down to his son.
He is survived by his son, James Derrick Mills (Joyce); his daughter, Melanie Mills Hall (Jeff); four grandchildren, Andrew Hall (Allison), Alex Hall (Zach), Matthew Mills (Kristen), and Daniel Mills (Rebecca); three great grandchildren; three sisters, Shirly Helms, Virginia "Pat" Whitaker, and Linda Pressley; and a brother, Donnie Mills.
JT was preceded in death by his wife, Linda Mills; his parents, Bert Mills and Louise Mills; three brothers, Bobby G. Mills, Wayne Mills, and Stevie Mills; and his sister, Peggy Hinson.
