LANCASTER, SC:::::::::::: Mr. Howard Walker Crawford, age 97, died Tuesday, August 30, 2016 at Morningside Assisted Living. He was born May 31, 1919 in York County to the late Thomas Luther Crawford and Corrie Lynn Crawford. He was married to the late Gladys Montgomery Crawford. Mr. Crawford worked for Springs Industries at Grace Bleachery for 32 years until his retirement in 1982. He served our great country during World War II, entering the Army at the beginning of the war. He served as a medic in India, Burma and China until the end of the war with the US Army 80th Fighter Group 89th Fighter Squadron. He enjoyed woodworking and used his excellent carpentry skills to make beautiful pieces of furniture. He also loved to be with people and enjoyed gathering with the Red Rose Seniors each week for many years. Mr. Crawford was a charter member of Grace Presbyterian Church where he faithfully served the Lord as an Elder and Sunday School teacher. He was a Mason with the Jackson Masonic Lodge 53 and was recently presented with a sixty year service award.
Mr. Crawford is survived by three sons, Robert and his wife Paulette, George and his wife Beth, and Richard and his wife Lorri, all of Lancaster; six grandchildren, Matt Crawford (Jenifer), Nathan Crawford (Jennifer), Katherine Crawford Dix (Jon), Laura Crawford, Patrick Crawford, and Adam Crawford; five great-grandchildren, Walker Crawford, Copeland Crawford, Craig Crawford, Preston Crawford, and Emma Grace Dix.
Mr. Crawford was predeceased by four brothers, William Herbert Crawford, Thomas Meek Crawford, Francis Alexander Crawford, and Cohen Neal Crawford.
The Celebration of Life Funeral Service for Mr. Crawford will be 3:00 pm Friday, September 2, 2016 at Grace Presbyterian Church by Rev. Marty Simmons with burial to follow at Lancaster Memorial Park.
The Family will receive friends from 6:30 8:30 pm Thursday evening, September 1, 2016 at Burgess Funeral Home, 1800 Charlotte Highway, Lancaster and other times at the home of Richard and Lorri Crawford. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Grace Presbyterian Church, 1026 Grace Avenue, Lancaster, SC 29720.
The family would like to thank the staff at Morningside Assisted Living for the excellent care they provided for Mr. Crawford in recent months.
