LANCASTER, SC – Mr. Heyward Erington Hilliard Jr, age 85, passed away on Sunday, April 12, 2026, at home surrounded by family, friends, faithful caregivers and the Patriot Hospice Staff. He was born July 29, 1940, in Kershaw, SC, he was the son of the late Heyward Erington Hilliard Sr. and the late Juanita Bruce Hilliard.
Lovingly and admirably known as Eric, and ‘Grandaddy’ to his growing family circle, he is a legend known for his wit, his love of friends and his Christ-like service to his church, community and country. He was a talented and loyal Industrial Engineer for Springs Industries, Foundry and Machine Shop and retired from Joslyn Clark control.
His competitive spirit drove him to much success on the local golf courses and drove his passion for seeing civic clubs provide opportunities to our young people. Laughter was a universal language for our father, and it was shared with everyone. He served our country aboard the USS NOA, patrolling the Mediterranean. He would stay connected to his shipmates for years after.
He loved outdoors in nature, hunting and fishing. Nothing could top his love for his wife, children and grandchildren and his impact is evident in the spirit of each.
He is survived by his daughter, Erica Abbott (Jimmy); his son, Heyward Hilliard (Amy); and four grandchildren, Catherine Abbott (Bradon), Ashley Abbott, Lawton Hilliard (Elizabeth), and Haley Hilliard.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Judy Martin Hilliard, of 59 years; two sisters Mary Alice Montgomery and Barbara Thompson.
The Celebration of Life Service for Heyward will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, April 20, 2026, at The Chapel of Burgess Funeral Home officiated by Pastor Matthew Coplin. The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 2:00 pm, one hour prior to the service.
The family is so grateful to everyone who shared their time, talents and love for so many years and in different ways. Special love forever to so many: Cathy Mahaffey-his saving Grace, Diane Reece, Sharron Witherspoon, Freda McKnight, Melinda Walters, Gail Artis, Sharon Caldwell and the caring Patriot Palliative and Hospice Team.
