LANCASTER, SC:::::::::::Mrs. Helene Harper Smith, age 87, died Monday, September 30, 2013 at Morningside Assisted Living. She was born June 15, 1926 in Florence, SC, the daughter of the late William Bruce Harper and Mary Jane Brake Harper and was the wife of the late John Watts Smith. Mrs. Smith attended Lander College and Columbia College and retired from the Lancaster County Library - many of those years she drove the Bookmobile. She was a member of First United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir, played hand bells, taught Sunday school, was a member of the United Methodist Women, Lunch Bunch, the Adult Fellowship Class and served on various church boards.

Mrs. Smith is survived by a son, Winston Smith and his wife Betty, a daughter, Rita Smith and two grandchildren, Derek Smith and Kristen Bowers and her husband Mark all of Lancaster.

Mrs. Smith, the youngest of 8 children, was preceded in death by a brother, Bruce Brake Harper, 6 sisters, Kathryn H. Anderson, May Ellen H. Johnson, Margaret H. Robbins, Carolyn Harper, Edith H. Keipper and Evelyn H. Prather and her beloved dog, Mister.

The Celebration of Life Funeral Service for Mrs. Smith will be 11:00 am Thursday, October 3, 2013 at First United Methodist Church by Rev. Charles Phillips. Burial will follow at Lancaster Memorial Park.

The Family of Mrs. Smith will receive friends from 5:30 - 8:00pm Wednesday, October 2, 2013 at Burgess Funeral Home and at other times at the home of her son, Winston Smith, 1820 Havenwood Drive.
