Obituary

ROCK HILL, SC ~ Mrs. Helen Mae Kirkley Hegler, age 88, passed away November 23, 2025, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill, SC. She was born July 22, 1937, in Jefferson, SC, a daughter of the late Arthur Lee Kirkley and the late Winnie Estelle Threatt Kirkley and was the loving wife of Ernest Roachel Hegler.

Helen worked in the textile dye industry for many years, where she cultivated many cherished and lifelong friendships. Her life was a tribute to family, friendship, and faith. She lived a life grounded in kindness and steady devotion. She was the sort of person who made any room warmer simply by being in it - she was always quick to smile, laugh, and give a warm comforting hug. Helen found joy in simple everyday pleasures. She enjoyed cooking for the people she loved, and her kitchen was often filled with the smells of her homemade favorites and the sound of easy conversation. Nobody could ever quite replicate her recipes, as they relied heavily on her loving touch.

She cherished time with her family most of all - holidays, birthdays, and even small get-togethers often became cherished memories because she knew how to make everyone feel welcome and loved. She had a playful sense of humor, an encouraging spirit, and a deep appreciation for all people. Helen was a devoted member of her church, where her gentle nature and love of children touched countless families. She spent many years volunteering in the church, caring for nursery babies and toddlers as if they were her own. Her calm presence, ready smile, and genuine affection made her a favorite among parents and little ones alike. Helen loved children, all children, and it showed in the way she made each one feel safe, seen, and cherished.

Mrs. Hegler is survived by her husband, Ernest R. Hegler; her daughters, Kim Painter (Steve) and Sandra Hegler; two sisters, Kitty Ormand and Bobbi Funderburk; her grandchildren, Jacy Kelly, Lily Buffone, and Elena Buffone; her great-grandchildren, Painter Kelly and Lucy Kelly; and numerous beloved nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her son, Stephen Everett Hegler; a sister, Wilma Sims; and her son-in-law, Richard Buffone.

Helen's family will remember her big heart and steady love she gave so freely. Her legacy lives on in the family and friends she cherished and the countless lives she touched.
