HEATH SPRINGS, SC – Mr. James Hazel Sutton, age 82, passed away on Thursday, April 16, 2026 at his home. He was born December 16, 1943, in Lancaster, SC, he was the son of the late James H. Sutton and the late Rosa Lee Knight Sutton Glenn and was the loving husband of the late Brenda Coley Sutton.
Hazel was a skilled brick mason by trade for many years, dedicating himself to his craft with pride and hard work. He was an avid reader who found joy in quiet moments with a good book. Hazel dearly loved his dogs, Sandy and Reese, and never missed a chance to enjoy his favorite Moose Tracks ice cream.
In his spare time, he cherished the companionship of his best friend, Timmy Craig, with whom he shared many meaningful moments. He also enjoyed fishing, finding peace and relaxation on the water. In his younger years, Hazel had a passion for running dogs and greatly enjoyed hunting. He will be remembered for his simple pleasures, loyal friendships, and the life he built through dedication and love.
Hazel is survived by his daughter, Penny Burnette (Brent); his son, James “Jimmy” Douglas Sutton (Janis); his four grandchildren, Amanda Greene (Danny), Leslie Rollings (Trey), Jamie Mackey (Brittany), and Ethan Burnette (Kylie); his three great-grandchildren, Austin Greene (Sheridan), and Luca and Boston Rollings; his sister, Rebecca Glenn Horton; his brother-in-law, Robert Hinson; and many special nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Brenda Sutton; his son, Jerome Sutton; his two daughters, Toni Horton, and Kimberly Mackey; his parents; and his sister, Laverne S. Hinson.
The Celebration of Life Service for Hazel will be held at 2:30 pm on Saturday, April 18, 2026, at The Chapel of Burgess Funeral Home officiated by Pastor Mitchell Austin. The family will receive friends from 1:30pm to 2:30pm, one hour prior to the service at Burgess Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Amanda and Danny Greene.
Hazel’s family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to his cousins, Jeff and Mitch Knight, for the many years of love, care, and unwavering support they so generously gave.
