Obituary

WAXHAW, NC ~ Mrs. Hazel Cook Starnes, age 90, passed away Friday, October 14, 2022, at her home surrounded by her family.  She was born July 8, 1932, in Indian Trail, NC the daughter of the late Jennings Augustus Cook and Mabel Pressley Cook. Mrs. Starnes worked as Treasurer for HR Johnson Construction Company.  She enjoyed reading, playing solitaire on her computer, word search puzzles, walking, family trips, and lipstick.  Mrs. Starnes was a fashion queen, always dressed to the tee.  Her most prized possession was her family.  From the many memories the family share, these are some of their most favorite; family trips to the Christmas tree farm, Bonclarken and the family condo at the  beach, the best grilled cheese maker ever, the best Hi-Ho Cherry-O player, playing Go Fish and Old Maid, sleepovers, reading "Puppy and Patchwork Blanket", watching Heehaw and Ray Stevens videos, and swinging on the front porch.  Mrs. Starnes was a member of Unity ARP Church.

Mrs. Starnes is survived by her husband, Albert J. Starnes; two daughters, Debbie McCray (Benny) of Monroe, NC, and Cindy Hildreth (Chris) of Monroe; a son, Bo Starnes (Pattie) of Waxhaw; six grandchildren, Jonathan Hildreth (Brittany), Amber Love (Chris), Kristen Keller (Brett). Abby Martin (Daniel), Torie Starnes, and Gracie Starnes; seven great grandchildren, Ava, Eli, Luke, Rhett, Emry, Reid, and Emerson; a brother, Larry Cook; three sisters, Brenda Joyce Nash, Jean Cook, and Pam Simpson (Dwayne); and a large extended family.

Mrs. Starnes was preceded in death by her parents; her stepmother, Willie Mae Cook; five brothers, J.A. Cook, Harrison Cook, Joe Cook, Tony Cook, and Bobby Cook; a sister, Bernice Hunter; and a son-in-law, Johnny Hildreth.

The Celebration of Life Service for Mrs. Starnes will be 11:00 am Tuesday, October 18, 2022, at Unity ARP Church, 3495 Unity Church Rd., Lancaster, SC officiated by Rev. Charles Hammond. Burial will follow in church cemetery.

The family will receive from 10:00 -11:00 AM, one hour prior to the service. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to a charity or church of one's choice.
