LANCASTER, SC ~ Mr. Harry Joe Montgomery, Sr., age 96, passed away Tuesday, July 13, 2021 at his home. He was born March 23, 1925 in Lancaster, a son of the late William James Montgomery and Jessie Hudson Montgomery and was the husband of the late Dorothy Evans White Montgomery. He served our country in the United States Navy during World War II. Following his service in the Navy, Mr. Montgomery graduated from the University of South Carolina, Class of 1949, with a bachelor's degree in accounting. He retired from Springs Industries as Director of Financial Reporting after more than 50 years of service. He was an avid gamecock fan. He always looked forward to the annual family vacation trip to Sunset Beach. He was a lifelong and faithful member of Shiloh ARP Church having served as an Elder, taught Sunday school for more than 40 years and served in many other capacities. Most importantly, he exemplified what a loving Christian husband and father should be.
Mr. Montgomery is survived by three sons, Harry "Chuck" Montgomery, Jr. (Rachel),
Walter James "Jim" Montgomery (Beverly), and Kenneth "Ken" White Montgomery (Donna); two daughters, Kathy Montgomery Killough (Danny), and Robin Montgomery Lewis (John); eleven grandchildren, Leah Montgomery, Zachery Montgomery, Anna Montgomery, Chelsea Matthia (Eldon), Jonah Montgomery, Casey Montgomery, Whitney Sia (Tim), Katie Hawkins (Chase), Jake Lewis, Ben Lewis (Bethany), and Andrew Lewis; and three great grandchildren, Emma Kate Hawkins, Josiah Hawkins and Reese Sia.
Mr. Montgomery was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dorothy; and his five siblings, Mildred Montgomery, Jack Montgomery, Max Montgomery, Jean Grice and Betty Montgomery.
The Celebration of Life Funeral Service for Mr. Montgomery will be 3:00 pm Friday, July 16, 2021 at Shiloh A.R.P Church officiated by Rev. Dean Franklin and Rev. Mark Miller. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 pm, Thursday, July 15, 2021 at Burgess Funeral Home and suggest memorial contributions be made to Shiloh A.R.P Church, 346 Shiloh Unity Road, Lancaster, SC 29720 or Hope of Lancaster, PO Box 166, Lancaster, SC 29721. The family would like to express a special thank you to his caregivers, Sharon Caldwell, Cathy Mahaffey and Paulette Ellis.
