Obituary

INDIAN LAND, SC :::::::::: Mr. Gordon Butler Thomas passed away at the age of 62 on August 14, 2014, less than 2 weeks after being diagnosed with cancer. His final days were spent surrounded by his family and best friend; however, it was his devoted wife Cathy that was there when he took his last breath and found peace. Gordon was born on July 6, 1952 in Sewickley, PA, and was proud to call it home. He was the son of the late Auburn and Juanita "Bootsie" Thomas. He is survived by his sister, Anita Mossett, and her husband Wayne Mossett who live in St. Petersburg, FL.

Gordon married his high school sweetheart, Cathy Holzer Thomas, in September of 1979 and had 2 beautiful and loving daughters, Alexa and Emily. Alexa lives just a few miles away from Cathy in S.C. with her fiancé, Mike Fratoe. Emily and her husband, Jason Creek, live in PA and they blessed Gordon with 2 grandchildren over the past two years, Sheldon and Hadley.

Gordon was unlike anyone else; after all, how many people do you know with 3 last names? He learned early the importance of hard work and dedication and at 8 years old he was already working in the local shoe shop. He gained the respect of many by working hard over the years and becoming the manager of a successful mortgage company. He was relocated numerous times over his 30 year career and made even more friends along the way. In fact, people used to joke and say that Gordon could go anywhere in the country and run into someone he knew.

He was loved and welcomed everywhere he went and there was always laughter and a good story to be told. At 17, he went to Woodstock and ended up in LIFE Magazine; he stood in line with a cantaloupe for the first batch of ice cream made by Ben and Jerry, and he trained circus bears with ice cream cones in New Hampshire.

Gordon lived life to the fullest. He was a man that people gravitated towards because of his outgoing personality and genuine kindness. He was sensitive and would cry when he got emotional, but he was strong and dedicated to the people he loved. He was a proud man; always pulling a comb out of his pocket to smooth his hair.

Gordon and his infectious joy and laughter will be missed by many, leaving a void in our hearts.

He was able to say goodbye to his family and close friends on his final day. Gordon was sure to let "his girls" know he loved them, and they were sure to let him know they were proud to be his wife and daughters.
