LANCASTER, SC – Mr. George Thomas Meeks, age 88, passed away on Thursday, April 16, 2026, at his home. He was born on March 5, 1938, in Monteagle, TN. He was the son of the late Charles Franklin Meeks and the late Maddie Ann Adams Meeks and was the loving husband of Barbara Sue Sampley Meeks.
Mr. Meeks was a devoted public servant and a man of strong character who dedicated over 25 years of his life to law enforcement. Serving as a Captain at the Hendersonville, TN police department, he earned the respect of his colleagues and community alike. During his distinguished career, he also attended the FBI Academy, further demonstrating his commitment to excellence and leadership. Prior to his career in law enforcement, Mr. Meeks proudly served his country in the United States Army.
A faithful member of the Church of Christ, Mr. Meeks lived a life grounded in his faith and values. He cherished time spent with his family and friends, always placing his loved ones at the center of his world. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, roles he treasured most.
Mr. Meeks found great joy outdoors, especially fishing and hiking. He had a determined spirit and a remarkable ability to accomplish anything he set his mind to. His strength, dedication, and love for his family will be remembered by all who knew him.
Mr. Meeks is survived by his wife of 66 ½ years; Barbara Meeks; his two sons, Jeff Meeks (Teresa), and Chris Meeks (Dana); his five grandchildren, JT Meeks, Ashley Watson (Adam), Spencer Meeks (Joy), Carson Meeks, and Owen Meeks; his three great-grandchildren, Kenna Watson, Alex Watson, and Camyren Meeks; two siblings, David Meeks (Pat), and Becky Byers; and many other special family members and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Maddie Meeks; two siblings, Ralph Meeks, and Johnnie Louise Gilliam; and his brother-in-law, Johnny Byers.
The Celebration of Life Service for Mr. Meeks will be held at 3:00pm on Friday, April 24, 2026 at The Chapel of Burgess Funeral Home officiated by Wayne Walton. The family will receive friends following the service.
In lieu of flowers, for those who wish, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
