LANCASTER, SC – Mr. Gene Kenneth Starnes, age 93, passed away on Friday, May 29, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. He was born December 23, 1932, in Lancaster, SC, a son of the late Robert Lee Starnes and the late Lula Mae McManus Starnes and was the husband of the late Carolyn Taylor Starnes.

Mr. Starnes was a man whose life was rooted in faith, family, education, and service to his community. A lifelong farmer at heart, he loved spending time on the farm and found great joy in the simple pleasures of rural life. He was also an avid fan of the Clemson Tigers and rarely missed an opportunity to cheer on Clemson football.

Family was the center of Mr. Starnes’ life. He treasured family gatherings and the time spent making memories with those he loved most. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren held a special place in his heart, and he delighted in watching their lives grow and flourish.

Mr. Starnes dedicated much of his life to education and the success of young people. He faithfully served as an educator at Buford Elementary School for many years before becoming principal, a position he held for more than three decades. Through his leadership, guidance, and commitment to excellence, he positively influenced countless students, teachers, and families throughout the community. In addition to his work in education, he served as a County Extension Agent for Horry County, where he shared his knowledge and passion for agriculture with others.

His faith was a guiding force throughout his life. Mr. Starnes was a faithful member of First Baptist Church in Lancaster. Prior to that, he was a devoted member of Bethlehem Baptist Church, where he faithfully served as both a deacon and usher. His servant's heart, steadfast faith, and dedication to his church family were evident to all who knew him.

Mr. Starnes will be remembered for his wisdom, kindness, strong work ethic, unwavering faith, and the lasting impact he made on his family, students, church, and community. His legacy of service and love will continue to be cherished by all who were blessed to know him.

Mr. Starnes is survived by his three children, Jane Napier (Ron), Ken Starnes (Geri), and Brandon Starnes (Charlene); nine grandchildren, Christian Starnes (Christen), Mitchell Starnes, Peyton Visbeck (Will), Journey Rucker, Lake Rucker, Haleigh Dabney (Andrew), Corey Rowell, Brandon Napier (Josie), and Brian Napier; nine great-grandchildren, Briar Chapman, Sunnie Dabney, Owen Napier, Evan Napier, Kate Napier, Weston Visbeck, Collins Visbeck, Cannon Starnes, and Cooper Starnes; his sister, Dr. Jackie Adams; special friend, Sue Peterson; and many other special family members and friends.
