Obituary

LANCASTER, SC – Mr. Francis "Frank" Joseph Ryan, Jr., age 77, passed away Friday, July 4th, 2025, at his home. He was born February 26, 1948, in Augsburg, Germany to the late Francis Joseph Ryan, Sr. and the late Helena "Helma" Vogel Ryan.  He served in the United States Navy and Army, serving two times in Vietnam.  His first tour was spent as a Plane Captain on the USS Enterprise as part of The US Navy.  His second tour led him to the skies over Vietnam as a Door Gunner with the US Army's 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile).  Frank loved his country and was proud of his military service.  After meeting the love of his life "Lucy", he supported his family as a Correctional Officer at the local, federal, and state levels.  After working in some of the country's roughest prisons, Frank deservedly retired after 29 years of service.

Frank, Dad, Poppy, will be remembered for his warm heart, quick wit, and fun-loving humor.  He brought his friends and family joy and fond memories that will carry on forever.  Frank will be remembered for his warm heart, and the joy he found in spending time with his grandchildren.  He enjoyed simple pleasures, like a strong cup of coffee, and, yes, a Pall Mall cigarette.  Frank found happiness in life by doing for others, especially his wife and family. His marriage was a testament to what we should all aspire to have in our own relationships. Frank's caring nature for his family is something that will live on for generations to come.

Frank is survived by his wife of 50 years, Lucille Walley Ryan; a son, Frank Ryan (Jodi) of Maryland; a daughter, Christine Ryan of Lancaster; four grandchildren, Dakota (Michael), Liam, McKenzie, Annalyse; two sisters, Karin Giovannetti (Ben), and Cyndi Ryan; and many special nieces and nephews

Frank was preceded in death by his parents.

The Celebration of Life Service for Frank will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, for those who wish, memorial contributions may be made to Disabled American Veterans.
