LANCASTER, SC ~ Mrs. Evelyn Grace Newton Smith, age 98, passed away on Wednesday, October 28, 2026. She was born on April 26, 1928, in Clemson, SC, a daughter of the late Augustus Franklin Newton and the late Cornelia Julia Greene Newton and was the loving wife of the late Norman Victor Smith, Jr.
Mrs. Smith was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and cherished friend whose life was marked by faith, family, service, and a genuine love for others.
Mrs. Smith began her years working at Belk before dedicating more than 25 years of service to Lancaster County Schools, where she served as an administrator. Earlier in life, she also worked on the campus of Clemson University in Clemson, South Carolina, the town where she was born and raised. Throughout her career, she was known for her dedication and commitment to her work and community.
A faithful member of Shiloh A.R.P. Church, Mrs. Smith found comfort and strength in her faith. She was a loving and devoted family woman who treasured every opportunity to spend time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her family was her greatest joy, and the love she shared with them will remain a lasting part of her legacy.
Mrs. Smith also had a generous heart and a passion for helping others. She volunteered at Springs Memorial Hospital, now known as MUSC-Lancaster, and enjoyed volunteering wherever she could make a difference. Her willingness to give her time and serve others reflected the kindness and compassion that were such a special part of who she was.
A proud and enthusiastic Clemson Tigers fan, Mrs. Smith carried a lifelong love for Clemson, a place that would always hold a special place in her heart. She was also a wonderful Southern cook who expressed her love for others through the meals she prepared and shared. Cooking was one of the many ways she showed her love, and she especially enjoyed sharing her delicious home-cooked meals with her family and friends, bringing everyone together around the table. She also treasured the friendships she shared with her dear friends, especially their weekly gatherings known affectionately as the “Lunch Bunch.” These lunches were a cherished tradition filled with fellowship, laughter, good food, and the joy of lasting friendship.
Mrs. Smith will be remembered for her devotion to her family, her steadfast faith, her years of service, and the many friendships she nurtured throughout her life. Her warmth, generosity, and love for others touched the lives of many. Though she will be deeply missed, the beautiful memories she leaves behind will continue to bring comfort and joy to all who knew and loved her
