LANCASTER, SCMr. Eugene Hammond Smith, age 83, died Friday, February 5, 2016 at his home. He was born August 5, 1932 in Wadesboro, NC, a son of the late Dee Vernual Smith, Sr. and Lydia Hammonds Smith and was the husband of the late Anna Laura Anderson Smith. Mr. Smith was a General Contractor and was co-owner of Smith-Watts Enterprises. He was the owner of Mr. Gs Food Stores throughout South Carolina, Smith Petroleum Company, Smith Rentals and Eugene H. Smith Realty. He loved his cows, enjoyed gardening and farming. He also loved NASCAR, enjoyed going to the races and his favorite driver was Dale Earnhardt, Sr. He served our country in the United States Army and was a member of Zion United Methodist Church.

Mr. Smith is survived by two daughters, Ginny Smith-Sistare and her husband, Morris and Sue Smith Heath, both of Lancaster; eight grandchildren, Reagan Faile Pilcher, Greg Faile, Stephanie S. Ghent, Mary Frances Blackmon, Caroline Reeves, DeAnna Heath, G. B. Heath, IV, and Alex Heath, and twelve great grandchildren, Caydence Blackmon, Ashton Blackmon, Anna Laura Blackmon, Brody Faile, Jade Infinger, James Infinger, Sarah Katherine Pilcher, Joseph Pilcher, Wyatt Ghent, Cade Ghent, Cheyann Crump and Grant Rhoney; and four sisters, Vivian Flake of Wadesboro, Sara Ellen Horne of Charlotte, Annie Lee Winfield of Wadesboro and Patsy Smith of Wingate.

Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a brother, Dee V. Smith, Jr; a sister, Magdalene McCollum, and a grandson, Grant Miller Heath.

The Celebration of Life Funeral Service for Mr. Smith will be 2:00 pm, Monday, February 8, 2016 at The Chapel of Burgess Funeral Home by Rev. Mike Burgess. Entombment will follow at Lancaster Memorial Park Mausoleum.

The family will receive friends one hour before the service, from 1:00 2:00 pm, Monday at Burgess Funeral Home, 1800 Charlotte Highway, Lancaster, SC and suggest memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society, Lancaster County Relay for Life, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210 or Childrens Attention Home, PO Box 2912, Rock Hill, SC 29732.
