"Tommie" Barber
October 13, 1918 – June 6, 2017
Eleanor Thompson Barber, "Tommie" went to meet her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on June 6, 2017 at the age of 98. She was born on October 13, 1918. She was the daughter of the late David A. Thompson and Sara Coles Thompson of Salem, New Jersey. Tommie graduated from Cooper Hospital Nursing School in Camden, New Jersey where she met Edward R. Barber, an intern. They were married August 15, 1942. Tommie was employed as a nurse while her husband was serving in WWII and later worked with her husband in his practice in Lancaster, South Carolina.
Gardening, flowers, beauty and art were some of her passions. She earned her Master Flower Show Judge degree and judged countless flower shows and state and county fair horticulture competitions. She gave many presentations at garden clubs and won numerous blue ribbons for her flower arrangements. She was part owner of a flower decorating business for weddings and parties.
As an active community member, Tommie served as President of the Lancaster Garden Club, the Medical Auxiliary, the Girl Scout Council, and received an Achievement Award from the Garden Club of South Carolina. She was a dedicated member of Christ Episcopal Church of Lancaster for more than 50 years and served on the Vestry, Altar Guild, Women of the Church and sang in the choir.
Tommie was a devoted wife and mother! She was a good and generous friend to many throughout her life in Lancaster and later when she moved to the Cypress of Charlotte. She enjoyed vegetable gardening, decorating, crafts, and traveling the world with her late husband.
In addition to her husband Eddie, Tommie was preceded in death by two brothers, Francis and Alan Thompson, and two sisters, Charlotte Bowers and Geraldine Powers.
Tommie is survived by a daughter, Susan Schuhmacher of Raleigh, NC; a son, Edward Bud Barber of Melbourne, Australia; three grandchildren, Matthew Schuhmacher and Grey Schuhmacher of Steamboat Springs, CO and Adrian Barber of Melbourne, Australia; one great grandchild, Ryken Schuhmacher of Steamboat Springs, CO; four nephews and four nieces.
A Service of Remembrance for Tommie will be 12 noon Saturday, June 10, 2017 at St. Johns Episcopal Church, 1623 Carmel Road, Charlotte, NC.
