Mr. C. Douglas Williams, 88, of Lancaster, died Friday, March 15, 2019 at Novant Health Presbyterian Hospital uptown Charlotte. He was born in Greenville County, SC on May 30, 1930, living his early years in Laurens County, SC. He moved to Lancaster in 1936. He was the son of the late Cletis Dudley Williams and the late Florrie Douglas Farr Williams. Mr. Williams graduated from Lancaster High School in 1947 and Clemson University in 1952 with a bachelor's degree in textiles. Upon graduation from Clemson University, he was commissioned as an officer in the United States Army. He served in Korea (1952-1954) during the Korean War as a First Lieutenant in the 512 th Ordinance H.A.M. CO. After his military service, he joined Springs Industries. He served in several supervisory positions in Kershaw, Fort Mill and Lancaster. He served for 22 years as plant manager of the Leroy Plant in Fort Lawn. He retired in 1987 after serving 35 years with the company. First and foremost, he loved God and his church, First Baptist Church of Lancaster. Mr. Williams was a family man and deeply loved his family. He was an outdoorsman, enjoyed crabbing, shrimping, fishing, boating and loved his visits to Edisto Beach and Lake Wateree. Mr. Williams was an avid Clemson Tigers fan and proudly supported them.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, the former Mae Bailes and their two children, Debra Ann Williams Sowell and Richard Douglas Williams and his wife, Laura of Lancaster; his sister, Ann Williams Young of Fairfax, SC; two grandsons, Kevin Williams Sowell and his wife, Kimberly, and Benjamin Sowell; and three great grandchildren, Julia, Jason and John Mark Sowell. He was preceded in death by his brother, Dudley Ray Williams.
The Celebration of Life Funeral Service for Mr. Williams will be 11:00 am Monday, March 18, 2019 at First Baptist Church of Lancaster officiated by Pastor Randy Hatcher. Visitation will follow the service in the church fellowship hall. Burial will be private at Westside City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to First Baptist Church, PO Box 670, Lancaster, SC 29721.
