LANCASTER, SC:::::::::::Mrs. Doris Ghent Phillips, age 88, died Thursday, January 7, 2016 at her home. She was born March 24, 1927 in Lancaster, a daughter of the late John Wesley Ghent, Sr. and Nellie Rose Sanders Ghent and was the wife of the late Jack Lendon Phillips.
Doris and Jack spent many years in Cyprus, the Philippines and Saudi Arabia before returning to Lancaster. She previously worked at Springs Memorial Hospital and also worked as a secretary for Thomas, Rushing, Goldsmith and Folks Law Firm until retirement. She will always be remembered for her beautiful smile, infectious laugh, quick wit and sense of humor. One of our favorite recent memories was the celebration of her 85th birthday at a local comedy club. She got up on the stage before the show, pretending to be the comedian and participated actively when the show began.
Mrs. Phillips is survived by two daughters, Carol Phillips Lyerly and her husband, Kenneth of Cumming, GA and Laura Phillips Russell and her husband, Scott of Fort Lawn; five grandchildren, Abe Lyerly, Garth Lyerly, Philip (Krystle) Lyerly, Colin Lyerly and Heather P. (Matt) Huitron; seven great grandchildren, Ken "Kent" Lyerly IV, Dylan Lyerly, Reid Lyerly, Avery Lyerly, Kate Lyerly, Colby Huitron and Mason Huitron; several beloved sisters in law and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Phillips was preceded in death by three brothers, John W. Ghent, Jr., Fred R. Ghent and C. Glenn "Spanky" Ghent and two sisters, June G. Hudson and Violet "Sis" McNaughton.
The Celebration of Life Funeral Service for Mrs. Phillips will be 2:00 pm, Sunday, January 10, 2016 at The Chapel of Burgess Funeral Home by Pastor Adam Wright. Burial will follow at Lancaster Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, from 1:00 - 2:00 pm, Sunday at Burgess Funeral Home, 1800 Charlotte Highway, Lancaster, SC and suggest memorial contributions be made to Hospice of Lancaster, 901 West Meeting Street, Suite 201, Lancaster, SC 29721.
